Aussie Crawl: 14th June 2015

Saturday morning started off a little damp as a few members met at the Capri Restaurant in Gore for a hearty breakfast before heading to Invercargill to start the annual Aussie Crawl, organised this year by the Southland Holden Club. Once everyone had been briefed and given their goodie bags (containing all sorts of interesting items), we headed off to the first stop at The White House Hotel in Lorneville. After a few refreshments the publicans choice was; Ford - Brian Hughes, Valiant - Ash Johnstone, Holden - Gary Crawford. Next stop was the Top Pub at Winton where we all had lunch and some more refreshments. Publicans choice here was; Ford - Stacey Chamberlain, Valiant - Marshall Sayer, Holden - Korena Bates.
After lunch the convoy headed to Mossburn pub with some cars stopping in Lumsden while our car load and a few others diverted to the Drummond Hotel for yet more refreshments and to check out the wobbly floor boards. No publicans choice here, as they were a little busy serving drinks and a little understaffed for the unannounced arrival of some thirsty travellers.
We then found our way back to Mossburn and caught up with the rest of the team in time to see some fairly impressive car skills performed by a few D1NZ enthusiasts. Everyone got extremely excited when Shannon got into his car (as we were all waiting with anticipation to see the Master in action...!), only to start it up and back it out of the way of any potential flying air missiles chipping the new paint job! Publicans choice here was, Ford - Bradley May, Valiant - Jarred Burns, Holden - Nathan Bates. Next (and final) stop, Te Anau Club. Publicans choice was; Ford - Brent & Jackie Hayston, Valiant - Matthew Watson, Holden - Dean Cousins. A few members had dinner at the Club while others headed to the Distinction Hotel to check in then across to the Moose for dinner. A great night was had at the Moose with yet more refreshments being consumed, a few good yarns, helping Kev get up from the floor at one stage, and singing and dancing to an awesome band!
Prize giving the next morning was held after breakfast at the Distinction Hotel with some excellent trade prizes on offer. 1st Overall Ford for the weekend was Brent & Jackie Hayston and 2nd Overall Shannon Crawford. 1st Overall Valiant for the weekend was Ash Johnstone, and 2nd Regan McLeod. 1st Overall Holden for the weekend was Jono Bevan, 2nd Sean McNamara.
A few of us then headed to Manapouri to see if the pub was open and to sample some more hydrating fluids... The decision was made to head to the home of the Sausage, Tuatapere, where we sampled some of the local cuisine (no sausages, but the blue cod was awesome!) and some liquid fizzy stuff. Next stop Orepuki (where the trees seemed to grow on a funny angle). I had never been to this hotel before but a very cool pub where one of the patrons jumped behind the bar to help out serve when we all arrived. After a quick sample of the amber liquid we headed down the road and, do we stop at Colac Bay... yes, no, yes, no, yes, no, yes, no (the 'no' won), so we decided Riverton pub would be our last port of call. A quick drink, game of pool, yarn with the locals and off home we headed.
All in all an awesome weekend, and was great catching up with the other clubs in the Southern region. There are a lot of extremely well presented cars out there that are a credit to their owners, and great to see them on the road. Congrats to all the winners and a big thanks to the Southland Holden Club for running a great event.
Cheers, Derek.
